Heh, the dimise of BeOS was overstated HAiku is back with a vengance.... firefox has been ported and there is more posix compatiblity in the OS than ever they currently have near full reverse compatiblity with the GCC 2.95 compiled BeOS and they system is built on GCC 4 now!!

I have booted Haiku on a dual Pentium 2 300mhz and it was runable even with one of the cores turned off with ram usage in the 70-90mb range of course that should improve after haiku R1 is released and if Haiku works with your net card (they have BSD driver compatiblity iirc ) you might even say that it is usable some people have even started to develop on it again (not that there aren't some small issuse still)

www.haiku-os.org check it out and tell me what you think keep in mind that it is ment to be a desktop operating system unlike linux which tries to be EVERYTHING (and does a half decent job at it)

also haiku is haveing a summer of code all their own so if you've go money burning a hole in your pocket i'm sure haiku, inc wouldn't mind helpng you there and it is a US non-profit

Linux doen't try to be everything. It tries to be a good kernel. It does a very good job at that.

Ashk; sensibly, you speak; agree with you, I do.
Speak like Yoda, I must, because sound intelligent, it does (or so believe, I do).

And yet, it says noob under your name...
Nah, I'm just kidding, I know why.
I did try Haiku when I was first trying out Linux distros, but I gave it up early as a bad job.
What do you actually like about it?
I pick Linux because it very well is everything, and it's very good at it. I personally don't see how that's a bad thing.

IT IS NOT JUST A KERNEL ....

that whould be the best part IMO :-)

remember it isn't even alpha quality yet... so if you tried it out and didn't like it yet big deal it just isn't ready also i think the requirements are still little higher because they compile in debugging tools

Linux fails at being the BEST at anything although it is great at many things example QNX and windows XP are better for real time stuff like audio production

X11 is not as fast as XP even with X11 using sockets the client server arch is inherently slightly slower

haiku makes some choices that linux can't/won't make.... ditch X11 and be very highly threaded from kernel to gui... I have ran haiku on a 300mhz dual PII and it did use both CPUs although the devs say that the CPU management is far crappy right now than BeOS's ever was... so... pre-alpha thats what you get ... but everyday they nock off a bug or two so that pretty impressive for a small team

I agree with only one thing that you just said: X11 is complete shit. I have other stuff to do right now, but I've been backburning an idea for a windowing system that I will call Graffiti, if it's not taken. I was going to call it Y, but that is taken. So while I'm waiting for your BeOS clone to reach an alpha, I think I'll use Linux, thank you very much. Audio production and threading aren't everything.
