in order to boot from a CD u need to have a bootable CD. I prefer UltraISO in order to burn my CDs. Plus it always tells me whether the image Im trying t burn is bootable or not.

Now that I read actually to the start of thread. Why do u want to partition the new drive so Linux can take over? Just connect your HDD to machine, take a Linux distro CD/DVD, pop the diskc inside, boot from it and start installing. Majority of current distros will detect the Windows installation and will display. When u will be creating partions during install make sure to avoid the Windows disk and u will be fine.

You could partition it from within the installation program.

Download the ISO
UnPack The ISO
Burn the ISO to a CD
Boot the computer from the CD
Follow the installation program

just download a program called UltraISO http://www.ezbsystems.com/ultraiso/ Thats the one I use.

as for distro. I'd say that u should go with something popular. openSUSE is good and easy to install. Fedora is not bad either.

U have to pay for Red Hat. Fedora is a free non-commercial distro made under supervision of Red Hat

Over their IRC channel, they've been saying that the project has stopped and that if you still use Red Hat, you should switch to Fedora.
